Who offers a humanist wedding in Iceland?
Humanist weddings in Iceland are offered by the humanist association Siðmennt – Humanists Iceland.
Languages offered:
Humanists Iceland offer ceremonies in Icelandic and English. Other languages depend upon availability of individual celebrants. You can see which languages the individual celebrants offer on the website of Humanists Iceland.
Do we get to choose the humanist wedding celebrant ourselves?
Humanists Iceland offers a list of individual celebrants. During the booking process you will be offered to list your preferred celebrants.
How to book a humanist wedding in Iceland:
First, you must fill out this registration form. You will be sent information on how to transfer the service fees, in order to secure your booking. The organisation contacts their pool of celebrants for availability on the day and location in question. Once the fees are paid and a celebrant has been appointed, you’ll receive contact information for the celebrant in question, along with information on the legal proceedings.
The wedding ceremonies of Humanists Iceland are bespoke and tailor-made to fit each individual couple, and their style, humour and wishes. The celebrant meets up with the couple, either in person or online, to discuss the ceremony and gather material for the ceremony script.
The ceremony can take place in whichever location the couple wishes (travel fees may apply) and the couple is responsible for contacting landowners or other authorities of the venue. Many couples hire a wedding planner to help them with the paperwork and practical affairs.
Afterwards, you might be asked about your experience in a feedback form.

The boring legal part
Humanists Iceland is acknowledged by the Icelandic state to perform legally binding weddings. Icelandic wedding legislation is gender neutral. Same-sex marriages are legally recognised, as well as marriages that include non-binary people.
Weddings performed in Iceland can be legally registered in most countries. Information about legal requirements for people with a domicile outside of Iceland can be obtained from the District Commissioner. A marriage certificate can be obtained at Registers Iceland after the ceremony has been held and the papers processed, and an Apostille, if required, is obtainable from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

You can also have an Icelandic humanist celebrant perform a symbolic, non-legally binding humanist wedding, for example if you are already legally married or if you just want a symbolic celebration of your relationship. Icelandic humanist celebrants also perform vow-renewals.
