How to get a humanist wedding in

Denmark

In Denmark, couples can exchange vows overseeing one of Denmark’s stunning beaches, large fields, or amidst a cozy, historic village.
Your Danish humanist wedding will always highlight your personal wishes and give you a romantic experience that will be a memory for life.

Who offers a humanist wedding in Denmark
Humanist weddings in Denmark are offered by The Danish Humanist Society (Humanistisk Samfund)

Languages offered:
Humanistisk Samfund offers wedding ceremonies in Danish and English.

Do we get to choose the humanist wedding celebrant ourselves?
Humanistisk Samfund will find an appropriate celebrant based on what part of Denmark you choose for your wedding ceremony.

How to book a humanist wedding in Denmark:
First, send an email to bryllup@hs.dk, explaining your wishes for the ceremony, including the date, location, and any other preferences or special requests.

If Humanistisk Samfund can accommodate your needs, you will be invited to a meeting with the celebrant, either in person or digitally, usually about three months before the ceremony. During this meeting, the celebrant will help you plan a personalized and meaningful ceremony, tailored to reflect your values. The celebrant will also write a personal speech for you based on your conversation, and there will be space for music, poetry, or anything else that fits your life values and the principles of humanism.

It typically takes about three months to prepare a wedding ceremony, so it’s important to get in touch well in advance. Payment is due after the ceremony has taken place.

Read more on Humanistisk Samfund’s wedding page (the page is in Danish, but you can see a Google translated version here).

Price:
A wedding ceremony costs DKK 4,400 (approx €590). Humanistisk Samfund also offers a combined wedding and naming ceremony. The cost for this is DKK 6,600 (approx €885).

At least one of you must be a member of the Danish Humanist Society to proceed with the ceremony. Non-Danish citizens are free to sign up as a members. The annual cost is DKK 425 (approx €57).

A humanist wedding ceremony in Denmark assumes that the couple has previously entered a legally valid marriage. Only municipalities and religious communities have the authority to perform legally binding weddings in Denmark.

Therefore, a Danish humanist wedding ceremony is unfortunately not legally binding in itself. You must undergo a legally binding marriage beforehand, for example the same morning in a Danish municipal building, town hall or similar. Humanistisk Samfund will be able to assist and advice you regarding this.

In some, but not all, municipalities, the officiant may be willing to come out and perform the legally binding civil ceremony in connection with the humanist wedding ceremony. Humanistisk Samfund has successfully carried out such combined ceremonies several times.

If you are interested in this, you should contact the municipality where the marriage will take place and ask if it is possible.
