How to get a humanist wedding in:
Romania
Who offers a humanist wedding in Romania?
Humanist weddings in Romania are offered by The Romanian Secular Humanist Association (ASUR).
Languages offered:
ASUR offers ceremonies in English, Romanian, and any other language that the celebrant might happen to know.
How to book a humanist wedding in Romania:
After the couple makes initial contact (see below), ASUR checks which celebrants are available for the time and place you want.
When you have made contact with your desired celebrant, you have a meeting with the celebrant, sign a contract and pay a deposit (about 30% of the total fee).
Then you fill in a form with questions about your relationship and the type of ceremony you want. Here, several options are available; for example classic, relaxed or more funny. When you have sent your requests to the celebrant, the information you have provided will be used to write a script for the ceremony.
The first edition of the script will be sent to you for revision, and you continue to work on it until you are satisfied, including the logistics of the events (timing, the entrance, where you and the visitors will be, the duration of the event, how the ending should be etc.).
Do we get to choose the humanist wedding celebrant ourselves?
Yes. After you have stated your desired time and place for the wedding, and other preferences, you will get a selection of individual celebrants to choose from. You can see a list of ASUR´s wedding celebrants here.
Price:
The basic price for a humanist wedding is 2500 RON (around 500 euro).

The boring legal part
ASUR is not authorized to perform legally binding weddings in Romania. Neither does ASUR require that you are legally married in Romania or elsewhere, before they can offer you a humanist wedding ceremony.
The custom in Romania is to go to a municipality office first, and get a civil, legally binding marriage there. And then, afterwards, it is customary to have a symbolic wedding ceremony in a church or in another faith or belief community, of which ASUR is one. Sometimes, a civil celebrant might come to the humanist ceremony and perform the legally binding civil ceremony first.
If you want to book a civil, legally binding wedding in Romania prior to the ceremony, ASUR will be able to help you through the legal requirements. If you want to figure it out for yourselves, this webpage is a good place to start.
If you are legally wed in another country, you can of course bring that certificate to the humanist wedding in Romania, but it is not a requirement since the ceremony, as mentioned, is purely symbolic and unofficial.
Romania marriage law is not gender neutral. However, in 2023, Romania lost a case in the European Court of Human Rights. That means Romania is now legally obliged to provide legal recognition to same-sex couples, and may risk financial sanctions from the Council of Europe if it fails to change the law. Read more.
