Humanist weddings in Europe

How to get a humanist wedding in:

Ireland

Who offers a humanist wedding in Ireland?
Humanist weddings in Ireland are offered by the Humanist Association of Ireland (HAI).

Languages offered:
HAI offers ceremonies in English. Some of our celebrants are able to speak other languages. If a couple wishes for another language to be included, they can check this possibility with individual celebrants.

Do we get to choose the humanist wedding celebrant ourselves?
Yes. You can search for a celebrant on this webpage. See more instructions below, under “How to book a humanist wedding in Ireland”.

How to book a humanist wedding in Ireland:
Note: It´s important that you book the wedding in good time, preferably at least six months in advance.

First, you need to search for a celebrant on HAI´s “Find a celebrant” webpage to find out which celebrants are available at your chosen time and place.

You can contact one or more celebrants by clicking on the red contact button on their individual profile pages.

  1. The celebrant will then contact you and advise if they are still available, and confirm the time and place and date. Then you sign a contract, agree the price and pay a deposit of the total amount (see below).
  2. The celebrant will invite you to a meeting where you discuss and plan the ceremony in detail. The celebrant will also inform you about the legal requirements needed to formally solemnize your marriage (read more here).
  3. The celebrant will thereafter prepare the script for the ceremony and send you a draft for any changes/additions. The celebrant will make sure you are happy with the script in advance of the ceremony, and check that everything is in order.
  4. On the day of the ceremony, the celebrant will arrive in good time to ensure all practicalities are in order, including the legal requirements.

Irish humanist weddings are designed to be personal and meaningful; they are about you as a couple celebrating your love for each other and making your commitment to one another, in the company of those closest to you, with appropriate well-chosen words, readings and music in a place of your choosing.

Where can humanist weddings be held?

Legal humanist weddings in Ireland must be held in venues which are open to the public and have a postal address.

That means you cannot get married in a private house or garden which is not open to the public. Nor can you get married on top of a mountain or on a beach because it does not have a postal address.

There are many options for legal humanist wedding venues, including outdoor venues, such as hotels, castles, and heritage sites which have a postal address.  Your celebrant will be able to advise you about suitable venues.

Price:
The fee you have to pay to the Humanist Association of Ireland is €90. This payment is made on the HAI website to secure your booking once you have secured your celebrant for your chosen date.

The fee to the celebrant is agreed with the client, and follows the guideline bands set by the HAI.

How to get in touch:
Booking of humanist weddings in Ireland starts on HAI´s “Find a celebrant” page. You can also contact the Humanist Association of Ireland on this email address: info@humanism.ie.

The celebrants who are accredited by the Humanist Association of Ireland are registered by the state to perform legally binding weddings. Irish wedding legislation is gender neutral. Same sex and opposite sex couples, as well as non-binary people, are treated equally.

Your humanist celebrant will inform you about the legal requirements and procedures to get legally married in Ireland. You can also read more here

You can also have an Irish humanist celebrant perform a symbolic, non-legally binding humanist wedding, for example if you are already legally married in Ireland or elsewhere.

Ireland is one of the few European countries where humanist weddings are recognized as legally binding by the state. Read more here about how you may bring an Irish marriage certificate back to your home country and get it legalized there.
